A. Expected physical changes

7) Metabolism

(a) Many women lose weight during the first trimester because of nausea, vomiting, and food intolerances, but should regain 16 to 30 lbs. (OB care provider will recommend appropriate gain) in the last two trimesters.

(b) Water retention is a normal occurrence because of numerous metabolic changes during pregnancy, and will be evidenced by increased voiding and edema).
