Specific hygienic needs of the postpartum mother.
a. Vaginal delivery
1) The mother will shower according
to her needs.
2) The mother will have been instructed
by her physician/practitioner to wash the genital area after voiding or
moving bowels.
(a) Usually some type of squirt bottle
is very useful for this.
(b) The spray should be directed from
front to back.
b. Cesarean section delivery
A mother delivering by cesarean section
should shower daily to prevent accumulation of germs on her body and around
the wound that may contribute to infection.
